Total Phase turns 25, and the tools have outlasted several generations of silicon

Twenty five years is a long time for a test tool company. Bus standards that looked permanent in 2001 have been superseded twice over. Total Phase, founded in 2001, is still on the bench.

Why the tools stayed

Total Phase built for the engineer doing the work rather than for the lab manager buying a capital instrument. An Aardvark I2C/SPI host adapter is small, it is inexpensive enough that a team can put one on every desk, and the software is the same on every platform. That combination is unglamorous and it is exactly why the tools survive a change of silicon vendor, a change of employer, and a change of protocol.

In our experience the tools that stay in service are the ones an engineer can reach for without raising a purchase request. A protocol analyser that lives in a drawer and needs booking is a tool that gets skipped, and the bug gets chased by guesswork instead. Total Phase understood that early.
