About Microtest 7631H Hipot Tester (8-Channel, High Current)

The Microtest 7631H Hipot Tester is the high-current variant of the 7631 series, delivering 8-channel electrical safety testing with AC withstand voltage up to 5000 V, DC withstand up to 6000 V, and insulation resistance measurement up to 12 GΩ. The “H” designation indicates higher output current capability compared to the standard 7631, making the 7631H suitable for testing components with higher capacitive loads such as large power transformers, high-voltage motors, and multi-layer insulation systems that draw more charging current during hipot testing.

High-Current Advantage

Components with significant winding capacitance or large surface area insulation draw substantial charging current during hipot testing. Standard hipot testers may trip their current limits prematurely on these loads, producing false failures. The 7631H provides higher output current capacity to maintain the programmed test voltage across capacitive DUTs without nuisance trips, ensuring that the full test voltage is applied for the specified dwell time. This is critical for large power transformers, high-voltage motor windings, and multi-section coil assemblies where inter-winding capacitance is inherently high.

Arcing Detection

The built-in arcing detection system monitors the test waveform for transient current spikes characteristic of insulation arcing. Unlike simple overcurrent detection that only catches complete breakdown, arcing detection identifies intermittent insulation faults, partial discharges and tracking events that precede full breakdown. Configurable sensitivity levels allow engineers to set detection thresholds appropriate to the DUT type, distinguishing between benign corona discharge and genuine insulation defects.

Applications

Power transformer manufacturers, large motor winding facilities, high-voltage cable producers, and switchgear assemblers deploy the 7631H for safety testing where standard hipot testers lack sufficient output current. The 8-channel architecture with internal scanner matrix automates multi-winding safety test sequences, testing every winding combination without manual reconnection.
