Overview
About GPM-8310 Digital Power Meter
The GW Instek GPM-8310 is a single-phase digital power meter and bench power analyzer that measures voltage, current and power from DC and 0.1 Hz up to 100 kHz with a 16-bit, 300 kHz sampling front end. It resolves up to 25 power-measurement parameters: true-RMS voltage and current, active/apparent/reactive power, power factor, phase angle, frequency, crest factor and total harmonic distortion, on a 5-inch TFT display (up to 10 parameters at once), and adds voltage/current/power waveform display and harmonic analysis to the 50th order. With ±(0.1% of reading + 0.05% of range) basic accuracy and standard RS-232C/USB/LAN/GPIB, it serves power-supply R&D, energy-efficiency testing and production lines in a single compact instrument.

A precise single-phase power analyzer: DC and 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz
Unlike a simple wattmeter, the GPM-8310 is a true power analyzer: a digital-sampling measurement engine acquires voltage and current simultaneously through a 16-bit A/D converter running at approximately 300 kHz, so distorted, switched-mode and reactive waveforms are measured accurately, not just sinusoidal mains. Input bandwidth spans DC and 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz, covering line frequency, DC rails and the higher-order content of PWM converters, motor drives and lighting ballasts. A crest factor of 3 or 6 (6A) lets the meter capture peaky currents, a deformed wave with CF up to 3, and up to 6 in half-range, without clipping, which is exactly what standby-power and inrush measurements demand.
Voltage, current and power measurement ranges
The GPM-8310 covers a wide span of single-phase loads with direct input plus external sensor input for higher currents:
| Item | GPM-8310 |
|---|---|
| Wiring system | Single-phase, two-wire (1P2W) |
| Voltage ranges | 15 V, 30 V, 60 V, 150 V, 300 V, 600 V |
| Current ranges (direct) | 5 mA, 10 mA, 20 mA, 50 mA, 100 mA, 200 mA, 0.5 A, 1 A, 2 A, 5 A, 10 A, 20 A |
| External sensor input | EX1: 2.5/5/10 V · EX2: 50/100/200/500 mV, 1/2 V |
| Max allowable input | 1 kV RMS (V) · 30 A RMS / 100 A peak (I, 0.5–20 A ranges) |
| Range selection | Manual or auto-ranging |
| Crest factor | 3 or 6 (6A) |
Measurement accuracy you can quote in a test report
Accuracy is specified by GW Instek under 18–28 °C after a 30-minute warm-up:
| Measurement | Condition | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage / Current | DC | ±(0.1% of reading + 0.2% of range) |
| Voltage / Current | 45 Hz ≤ f ≤ 66 Hz | ±(0.1% of reading + 0.05% of range) |
| Voltage / Current | 66 Hz < f ≤ 1 kHz | ±(0.1% of reading + 0.2% of range) |
| Active Power (PF = 1) | DC | ±(0.1% of reading + 0.2% of range) |
| Active Power (PF = 1) | 45 Hz ≤ f ≤ 66 Hz | ±(0.1% of reading + 0.05% of range) |
| Active Power (PF = 1) | 66 Hz < f ≤ 1 kHz | ±(0.2% of reading + 0.2% of range) |
| Frequency | All | ±0.06% of reading |
Higher-frequency bands (1 kHz–100 kHz) carry additional frequency-dependent terms per the datasheet, and the meter applies zero-level compensation on each range change to hold these figures.
25 power parameters and waveform display on a 5-inch TFT
The GPM-8310 derives 25 power-measurement parameters and shows up to 10 simultaneously across two numerical modes (General: 2 main + 8 secondary; Simple: 4 main). Parameters include Vrms/Vmn/Vdc/Vac, Irms/Idc/Iac, active power P, apparent power VA, reactive power VAR, power factor PF, crest factor (CFV/CFI), phase angle (DEG), frequency (VHz/IHz), voltage/current/power peaks and total harmonic distortion (THDV/THDI). Beyond numbers, the meter plots voltage, current and power waveforms and an integration (Wh/Ah) function with automatic level-changing for energy and standby-power measurement, making the GPM-8310 a genuine analysis tool, not just a digital wattmeter.
Harmonic analysis to the 50th order (IEC 61000-4-7)
Using a zero-cross simultaneous-calculation method, the GPM-8310 measures voltage, current and power harmonics up to the 50th order over a 10 Hz to 1.2 kHz fundamental range, meeting IEC 61000-4-7 harmonic-measurement requirements at 50/60 Hz. Harmonic data appears as bar graph, list and THD, so engineers can verify power-quality compliance and diagnose distortion sources directly on the bench. The instrument is also listed as an accepted device for SPEC Power® testing.
Standard and optional interfaces for automated test
Every GPM-8310 ships with RS-232C, USB host/device, LAN and GPIB for SCPI remote control and integration into ATE racks. The USB host port handles screen capture, internal record-data access and firmware update. For production and data-logging applications, GW Instek offers a 4-channel D/A output (±5 V FS, 16-bit resolution), remote-control I/O (EXT HOLD/TRIG/START/STOP/RESET, INTEG BUSY) and a digital I/O board (OUT1–OUT4, TTL) so the meter can drive pass/fail handling on the line.
Applications
The GPM-8310’s bandwidth, accuracy and harmonic analysis make it well suited to:
- Power-supply and adapter R&D: efficiency, no-load and standby power on SMPS, chargers and AC/DC adapters across the full load range.
- Energy-efficiency and standby-power compliance: integration and SPEC Power® support for regulatory and ENERGY STAR-style testing.
- LED driver and lighting test: power factor, crest factor and harmonic distortion on electronic ballasts and drivers.
- Motor, appliance and home-appliance testing: single-phase active power, PF and inrush characterisation with high crest-factor capture.
- Production and ATE: GPIB/LAN/USB remote control plus optional digital I/O for automated single-phase power screening.
