SEGGER emLoad is an embedded bootstrap loader that enables secure, reliable firmware updates in deployed embedded systems. It supports multiple delivery channels, UART, USB HID, emUSB-Device, SD card via emFile, emUSB-Host mass storage, and NFC (NTAG), making it adaptable to consumer devices that update over USB, industrial equipment that loads firmware from an SD card, and IoT nodes receiving over-the-air updates. emLoad performs in-place updates without requiring persistent storage for a second firmware image, which is particularly valuable on microcontrollers with limited flash where reserving a full update partition is impractical.

Security and Firmware Formats

emLoad includes encryption and decryption capabilities to validate the authenticity of firmware images and verify that they originate from the intended manufacturer without tampering. This is increasingly important as regulations such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act mandate secure update mechanisms for connected products. The bootloader accepts industry-standard firmware formats including Intel HEX (.hex), Motorola S-record (.mot), and raw binary (.bin), covering the output of virtually all embedded toolchains.

emLoad ships with Windows host tools, PrepareFW for firmware image preparation, and dedicated USB HID and UART updater applications provided as both binaries and source code, enabling teams to build custom update workflows. Written in portable ANSI C, the bootloader compiles across a wide range of targets and compilers.
