About GSAS Dual DAC Interface

The GSAS Dual DAC Interface (IF-DDAC) is a two-channel digital-to-analog converter module that provides two independent 8-bit DAC outputs for waveform generation and analog output experiments. Each channel converts an 8-bit digital value written from the microprocessor into a proportional analog voltage, and the two channels can operate simultaneously to produce different waveforms or to generate X-Y patterns when connected to an oscilloscope in X-Y mode. The module connects to GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard bus connector and includes clearly labelled output terminals and test points for oscilloscope probing.

GSAS Dual DAC Interface Module

Waveform generation is a foundational experiment that connects digital programming concepts to analog signal theory. Students program lookup tables containing sample values for sine, square, triangular, and sawtooth waveforms, then output these values sequentially to the DAC at timed intervals to produce the desired analog waveform. With two independent channels, the IF-DDAC enables simultaneous generation of different waveforms on each output, for example, a sine wave on channel A and a cosine wave on channel B, and X-Y Lissajous pattern generation when both outputs feed an oscilloscope. These experiments teach timer programming for precise sample timing, lookup table design, and the relationship between sample rate, frequency, and waveform fidelity, which are core concepts in digital signal generation and DSP fundamentals.

Compatibility

The IF-DDAC module connects to all current GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard expansion bus connector:

  • GSAS 85A Microprocessor Trainer
  • GSAS 86E Microprocessor Trainer
  • GSAS 51E Microcontroller Trainer

No additional wiring or external power supplies are required, the module draws power and bus signals directly from the trainer.

Why GSAS

GSAS manufactures the Dual DAC Interface in Bangalore as part of its analog I/O peripheral module range. The two-channel design doubles the experimental possibilities compared to a single-DAC module, simultaneous waveform generation, phase-shifted outputs, and X-Y pattern display are all possible without additional hardware. Each channel provides clean analog output suitable for direct oscilloscope observation, making waveform generation experiments visually engaging and pedagogically effective. The GSAS education products team provides lab manual content for DAC interfacing experiments aligned with Indian university embedded systems curricula.
