About GSAS Elevator Simulator Interface

The GSAS Elevator Simulator Interface (IF-ELV) is a multi-floor elevator simulation module that presents students with a real-time control systems challenge: managing floor requests, door timing, and floor display for a simulated elevator system. The module features floor indicator LEDs, call request switches for each floor, and direction indicators, all interfaced to the microprocessor trainer through the standard bus connector. Students write the complete elevator control program, implementing state machines and request queuing algorithms in assembly or C.

GSAS Elevator Simulator Interface Module

Elevator control is an excellent real-time programming exercise because it requires managing multiple simultaneous inputs (floor call buttons), maintaining system state (current floor, direction, pending requests), making scheduling decisions (which floor to service next), and coordinating timed outputs (door open/close, display update), all within deterministic timing constraints. The IF-ELV module enables experiments ranging from simple two-floor up/down control to sophisticated multi-floor scheduling with priority queuing, nearest-floor-first algorithms, and directional service optimisation. These experiments build the state machine design, interrupt handling, and real-time scheduling skills that are directly applicable to industrial automation, process control, and embedded systems where multiple asynchronous events must be managed concurrently.

Compatibility

The IF-ELV module connects to all current GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard expansion bus connector:

  • GSAS 85A Microprocessor Trainer
  • GSAS 86E Microprocessor Trainer
  • GSAS 51E Microcontroller Trainer

No additional wiring or external power supplies are required, the module draws power and bus signals directly from the trainer.

Why GSAS

GSAS manufactures the Elevator Simulator Interface in Bangalore as part of its control and simulation peripheral module range. The elevator simulation is one of the most popular and engaging experiments in the microprocessor lab, students can immediately see the result of their control logic as floor indicators light up, direction arrows change, and the simulated car moves between floors. This visual feedback loop makes debugging intuitive and keeps students engaged with increasingly complex scheduling algorithms. The GSAS education products team provides lab manual content for elevator control experiments aligned with Indian university embedded systems and real-time systems curricula.
