About GSAS LCD 16x2 Display Interface

The GSAS LCD 16x2 Display Interface (IF-LCD) is a character display module featuring an HD44780-compatible 16-character, 2-line LCD for display output interfacing experiments. The module provides the complete LCD interface, data bus, control signals (RS, R/W, E), and contrast adjustment, through the standard bus connector, enabling students to learn the HD44780 command protocol for display initialisation, character writing, cursor positioning, display shifting, and custom character generation using the LCD’s CGRAM. This is the same LCD controller protocol used in thousands of embedded products, making it one of the most practically relevant interfacing experiments in the microprocessor curriculum.

LCD interfacing teaches students the distinction between command and data modes, the importance of timing constraints in peripheral communication, and the concept of memory-mapped display buffers.
