The GSAS Musical Tone Generator Interface (IF-MTG) is an audio output module that uses the Programmable Peripheral Interface IC (8255) to generate musical tones through a speaker with driver amplifier circuit. Students program the 8255 PPI to produce square waves at specific frequencies corresponding to musical notes, control the tone duration through software timing, and sequence multiple notes to play melodies, applying PPI programming, frequency calculation, and real-time sequencing concepts in an audibly engaging way. The module connects to GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard bus connector and produces immediate audible feedback, making it one of the most rewarding interfacing experiments for students.

PPI programming is a core topic in every microprocessor course, but generating LED blink patterns alone does not convey the precision and range of software-controlled output.
