About GSAS Traffic Lights Interface

The GSAS Traffic Lights Interface (IF-TRL) is a multi-junction traffic light simulation module featuring red, amber, and green LED arrays arranged to represent a realistic road intersection. Students program the microprocessor to implement timed traffic light sequencing, controlling the signal phase transitions (green to amber to red) across multiple directions with correct timing and overlap prevention. The module connects to GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard bus connector, with each LED individually addressable through the trainer’s I/O ports, giving students complete software control over every signal in the intersection.

GSAS Traffic Lights Interface Module

Traffic light control is one of the most intuitive and visually engaging real-time control experiments in the microprocessor curriculum. The IF-TRL module enables a progression of experiments from simple two-direction alternating signals to sophisticated multi-phase intersection control with amber transition timing, all-red safety intervals, and sensor-triggered priority modes. Students implement these as state machines with timed transitions, learning to design state transition diagrams, manage multiple concurrent timers, and handle the safety constraint that opposing directions must never show green simultaneously. Advanced experiments include emergency vehicle priority override, adaptive timing based on simulated traffic density, and flashing amber night-mode operation. These experiments teach the same state-machine design and real-time timing skills used in actual traffic management systems deployed at intersections worldwide.

Compatibility

The IF-TRL module connects to all current GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard expansion bus connector:

  • GSAS 85A Microprocessor Trainer
  • GSAS 86E Microprocessor Trainer
  • GSAS 51E Microcontroller Trainer

No additional wiring or external power supplies are required, the module draws power and bus signals directly from the trainer.

Why GSAS

GSAS manufactures the Traffic Lights Interface in Bangalore as part of its motor and control peripheral module range. Traffic light control is a universally understood application that makes abstract programming concepts immediately tangible, students can see their state machine logic playing out in real time as signals change colour across the intersection. The multi-junction LED layout provides enough complexity for meaningful control system design while remaining visually clear and easy to debug. The GSAS education products team provides lab manual content for traffic light control experiments aligned with Indian university embedded systems and real-time systems curricula.
