Overview
About GSAS Solar PV Charger Module
The GSAS Solar PV Charger Module is a solar photovoltaic charging circuit designed for hands-on education in renewable energy harvesting and IoT power system prototyping. The module provides a complete solar charge controller circuit, including a solar panel input, charge regulation circuitry, battery charging output, and regulated DC output, allowing students to study the full energy harvesting chain from photovoltaic cell to regulated power supply. It connects to GSAS microprocessor trainer kits through the standard bus connector, enabling software-controlled monitoring of solar panel voltage, charging current, and battery state.
In embedded systems and IoT curricula, power management is increasingly important but often poorly covered in traditional microprocessor labs. The Solar PV Charger Module bridges this gap by providing a tangible, measurable energy source that students can interface with microcontroller ADC inputs. Lab experiments include measuring open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of the solar panel under varying light conditions, characterizing charge/discharge curves, implementing maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms in firmware, and designing low-power IoT nodes that harvest and manage their own energy. These experiments connect embedded programming skills to real-world energy and sustainability challenges.
For IoT prototyping projects, the module serves as a self-contained power source that students can integrate into wireless sensor nodes, environmental monitoring stations, and remote data loggers. By combining the Solar PV Charger with a GSAS microcontroller trainer and wireless communication modules, students can build complete solar-powered IoT systems, from energy harvesting and power management through sensor data acquisition and wireless transmission.
