About GPT-9800/9900 Series

The GW Instek GPT-9800/9900 Series is a family of production-grade hipot testers and electrical safety testers that combine AC withstand, DC withstand, insulation resistance and ground bond testing in a single bench instrument. Built on a high-efficiency PWM amplifier platform, the GPT-9800 delivers 200 VA AC test capacity and the GPT-9900 delivers 500 VA, both with true-RMS leakage current measurement down to 1 µA resolution for accurate pass/fail judgment against tight safety limits.

The series spans eight models across two power platforms. The GPT-9804 and GPT-9904 are 4-in-1 testers (AC withstand + DC withstand + insulation resistance + ground bond); stepping down, the GPT-9803 / GPT-9903A add insulation resistance, the GPT-9802 / GPT-9902A add DC withstand, and the GPT-9801 / GPT-9901A are AC-withstand-only leakage current testers. A hipot tester for AC and DC dielectric withstand testing

As a hipot tester, the GPT-9800/9900 applies AC withstand voltage from 0.050 kV to 5.000 kV and DC withstand voltage from 0.050 kV to 6.000 kV, set in fine 2 V steps. On the 200 VA GPT-9800, AC withstand current reaches 40 mA (200 VA at 5 kV); on the 500 VA GPT-9900 it reaches 100 mA (500 VA at 5 kV) for larger DUTs and higher charging currents. DC withstand current is up to 10 mA (GPT-9800) or 20 mA (GPT-9900). The adjustable ramp-up time (0.1 s–999.9 s) lets the test voltage rise gradually to protect the device under test, while the test timer (OFF, 0.5 s–999.9 s) and upper/lower judgment limits define each step. Zero-crossing turn-on ensures output always starts at the zero crossing of the sine wave, eliminating surge transients that cause false failures on sensitive DUTs.

For accurate dielectric withstand verification, the GPT-9800/9900 measures leakage current as a true-RMS value with 1 µA (0.001 mA) best resolution and ±(1.5% of reading + 30 µA) accuracy. The AC withstand current measurement range runs from 0.001 mA to 40.0 mA (GPT-9800) or 0.001 mA to 100.0 mA (GPT-9900), making the series a precise leakage current tester for production lines where small leakage readings on non-sinusoidal waveforms must be judged reliably. The window-comparator method gives clear PASS/FAIL judgment with high-intensity status indication so operators read results at a glance, even in a noisy factory environment.

Insulation resistance and ground bond testing

The 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 models add insulation resistance (IR) testing with a DC test voltage adjustable from 50 V to 1000 V in 50 V steps. The GPT-9800 measures IR from 1 MΩ to 9500 MΩ, while the higher-power GPT-9900 extends measurement up to 50 GΩ for high-impedance insulation. The 4-in-1 GPT-9804 and GPT-9904 also perform ground bond testing with an AC output current range of 3.00 A to 30.00 A (GPT-9800) or 3.00 A to 32.00 A (GPT-9900) and a resistance measurement range of 10 mΩ to 650.0 mΩ. Open-circuit detection on the ground bond terminals checks that the test leads are properly connected before the test starts, ensuring accurate measurement of protective-earth continuity.

Throughout each test cycle the GPT-9800/9900 protects both operator and DUT. ARC detection automatically cuts off the output within 150 µs on an abnormal voltage or current-limit trip, and the tester automatically discharges the DUT after each test to remove residual high voltage. A safety INTERLOCK function adds double protection by inhibiting high-voltage output when the interlock key is removed. The high-efficiency PWM amplifier isolates the output from input AC-source fluctuation and reduces heat generation during continuous production testing. Up to 100 memory blocks store single-step test conditions, and AUTO mode chains up to 16 manual steps into an automated multi-step safety routine, ideal for unattended sequencing of ACW, DCW, IR and GB tests.
