About GSAS Digital IC Tester
The GSAS Digital IC Tester is a handheld, microcontroller-driven device for out-of-circuit testing of digital integrated circuits. Insert any 14 to 40-pin DIP IC into the ZIF socket, and the tester identifies the device, runs its truth table, and displays pass/fail results on the built-in LCD, no reference IC or external equipment needed.

The device supports 100+ IC families including the full 74 series (TTL and CMOS), common microcontrollers, peripheral ICs (8255, 8253, 8259), and RAM modules. An advanced search function can identify unknown ICs by testing them against the internal library, useful for legacy board repair where component markings are unclear.
How a Digital IC Tester Works
A digital IC tester is a functional tester, not a curve tracer or a parametric analyser. The principle is simple enough to state in one paragraph, and understanding it tells you exactly what a pass result does and does not prove.
- Identify the device under test. You either key in the part number, or let the tester run its search routine and match the device against its internal library.
- Apply power on the correct pins. Different DIP packages put VCC and GND in different places, which is why the tester needs to know the part before it energises anything. The GSAS unit also supports a power-pin swap mode for parts whose supply pins differ from the family default.
- Drive the inputs, sample the outputs. For each row of the device’s truth table, the tester drives the input pins to a known state and reads back the output pins.
- Compare against the expected truth table. Every row must match. A single mismatched row fails the device.
- Report. The LCD shows pass or fail together with the identified part number, and continuous-loop mode repeats the sequence so an intermittent fault has a chance to show itself.
Two consequences follow. A pass means the logic function is correct at the tester’s own supply voltage and switching speed, so it does not certify propagation delay, drive strength or behaviour at the frequency of your target board. And testing is out-of-circuit: the IC must be out of the board (or in a socket), because surrounding components would otherwise load the pins and produce false failures.
Digital IC Tester or Analog IC Tester?
This is the question most buyers arrive with, and the honest answer decides whether this instrument is the right one.

The GSAS Digital IC Tester tests digital devices only. It does not test op-amps, regulators, discrete transistors or other analog parts, and it does not measure parametric values such as offset voltage or gain. If your bench needs both, the digital tester covers the logic side and a separate analog or in-circuit instrument covers the rest. If your failures are on legacy digital boards, glue logic, memory and peripheral controllers, this is the instrument that resolves them fastest.
