Overview
About AFG-2000 Series
The GW Instek AFG-2000 / AFG-2100 Series is an entry-level arbitrary function generator that puts sine, square, ramp, pulse, noise and user-defined arbitrary waveforms on a single, easy-to-use bench instrument. With a 20 MSa/s sample rate, 10-bit vertical resolution and 4k points of non-volatile arbitrary-waveform memory, it serves as a versatile signal generator for R&D, education labs, production test and field service. A clear 3.5-inch LCD shows all key settings simultaneously, and free PC waveform-editing software lets you build custom stimulus patterns and download them over USB.
The family spans six models in three bandwidth grades. The base AFG-2000 series covers 5, 12 and 25 MHz (AFG-2005 / AFG-2012 / AFG-2025); the AFG-2100 series mirrors those bandwidths (AFG-2105 / AFG-2112 / AFG-2125) and adds AM/FM/FSK modulation, linear and logarithmic sweep, and a built-in 5 Hz–150 MHz frequency counter: so you can match both bandwidth and feature set to the job.

An arbitrary function generator with 20 MSa/s arbitrary waveforms
At the core of every AFG-2000 and AFG-2100 model is a direct-digital-synthesis engine that plays back arbitrary waveforms at a 20 MSa/s sample rate with 10-bit amplitude resolution and 4k points of non-volatile waveform length. Beyond the five standard functions, sine, square, ramp, noise and arbitrary, the instrument outputs 1 mVpp to 10 Vpp into 50 Ω (2 mVpp to 20 Vpp open-circuit) with a ±5 Vpk DC offset into 50 Ω, ±20 ppm frequency stability and a TTL-compatible SYNC output. Square-wave duty cycle is adjustable from 1% to 99% below 100 kHz, narrowing toward 50% as frequency rises, which supports PWM and digital timing work. The bundled PC waveform-editing software lets engineers design complex stimulus patterns on a computer and transfer them to the instrument over USB.

Maximum frequency applies to sine and square waveforms; ramp runs to 1 MHz across the range. The AFG-2100 models add modulation, sweep and the built-in counter at each bandwidth grade. GSAS helps you select the model whose bandwidth and feature set match your test requirement.
Modulation, sweep and frequency counter (AFG-2100)
The AFG-2100 models extend the platform from a basic waveform source into a more complete bench tool. AM and FM modulation accept internal or external modulating signals (2 mHz–20 kHz internal; DC–20 kHz external), with AM depth adjustable from 0% to 120%. FSK shifts between two frequencies at rates up to 100 kHz for digital-communication and protocol testing. Linear or logarithmic sweep runs from a start to stop frequency over 1 ms to 500 s, useful for filter and frequency-response characterisation. A built-in frequency counter measures 5 Hz to 150 MHz with ±20 ppm time-base accuracy, so a single instrument both generates and measures frequency on the bench.
Applications
The AFG-2000 / AFG-2100 series suits a broad range of bench and teaching tasks:
- Embedded and circuit prototyping: clock, trigger and stimulus signals for sensors, op-amps and digital logic.
- Filter and frequency-response testing: sweep (AFG-2100) characterises cutoff, passband and roll-off.
- PWM and digital timing: adjustable 1%–99% duty cycle drives motor-control and power-switching experiments.
- Communications and modulation labs: AM, FM and FSK (AFG-2100) for analog and digital modulation teaching and bring-up.
- Education and training: clear 3.5-inch display, simple operation and PC waveform editing make it a fit for university and technical-institute labs.
