About Microtest 8761NAC Cable Tester (USB-C, Hipot, 1024-Point)

The Microtest 8761NAC Cable Tester combines 1024-point continuity testing, AC hipot up to 5 kV, DC hipot up to 6 kV, insulation resistance measurement, and dedicated USB Type-C testing in a single production instrument. The “NAC” designation reflects the integrated USB-C test capability, including connector orientation detection and E-Marker IC verification, addressing the growing need for comprehensive cable testing as USB-C proliferates across consumer electronics, computing, automotive, and industrial applications.

USB-C Test Capability

USB Type-C cables require verification beyond standard continuity and hipot testing. The 8761NAC tests connector orientation (flip detection), verifying that the cable functions correctly in both orientations as required by the USB-C specification. E-Marker IC testing reads the electronically marked cable capabilities, current rating, USB data speed, alternate mode support, confirming that the E-Marker is present, programmed correctly, and communicating per specification. This catches assembly defects in the E-Marker solder joints and programming errors that would cause the cable to misidentify its capabilities to the host device.

Combined Test Workflow

Integrating continuity, hipot, insulation resistance, and USB-C testing in a single instrument eliminates the need for separate test stations for conventional cable testing and USB-C protocol verification. A complete test sequence runs continuity checks on all 1024 points, applies hipot voltage between conductors and between conductors and shield, measures insulation resistance, and verifies USB-C orientation and E-Marker, all in a single fixture without handling the cable between instruments. This reduces test cycle time and floor space while improving test coverage.

Applications

USB-C cable assembly manufacturers, consumer electronics cable producers, automotive USB interconnect suppliers, and contract cable manufacturers deploy the 8761NAC for production testing of USB-C cables, USB-C to legacy adapter cables, and complex multi-connector cable assemblies that include USB-C alongside other connector types. The 1024-point capacity handles assemblies with multiple high-pin-count connectors.
