About USB Isolator

The SEGGER USB Isolator (part number 8.07.02) is a host-side galvanic isolation adapter that sits between the host PC and a J-Link debug probe or Flasher production programmer. It provides 3 kV basic isolation at USB Full-Speed, the protective layer embedded teams need when debugging motor control boards, inverters, EV powertrain electronics, or any target where the host ground is not the same as the target ground. Teams in India working on high-voltage development and noisy USB-hub environments use it to protect laptops and workstations from overvoltage transients that can otherwise destroy a USB controller.
How It Protects Your Host and Target
SEGGER’s isolation accessories cover two different risk surfaces. Target-side isolators, the J-Link Isolator and Flasher Isolator, sit between the probe and the target’s JTAG/SWD connector, galvanically isolating the debug signals at the target end. The USB Isolator is different: it sits between the host PC and the probe, isolating the USB link itself. In SEGGER’s own words, “the Isolator electrically separates the host from the J-Link and target system. It protects the J-Link and target hardware, but also secures the host PC against overvoltage from the target.”
That host-side protection matters most when the development tool is not connected to the same ground as the application under test, and when low-budget or industrial USB hubs introduce electrical spikes. SEGGER explicitly recommends the USB Isolator for motor control development, inverter applications, and any high-voltage work. For comprehensive protection, SEGGER recommends combining the USB Isolator with a target-side JTAG or SWD Isolator, the two accessories address different failure modes and are not substitutes for each other.
