Validating DC power delivery on large designs with HyperLynx PI is a Siemens EDA EBS Expert Series session on validating power delivery across dozens of power networks on modern, complex PCB designs, a task that has become a critical and time-consuming challenge as board complexity grows. The session demonstrates how recent improvements in HyperLynx streamline the DC Drop analysis workflow for high PDN count designs.

Through a product demo on a large, real-world design, Siemens EDA walks through power network setup, running DC Drop simulations across all nets, and reviewing results, all with significantly less effort than before. The session covers smarter setup utilities, more flexible model assignment, and new results viewers that help engineers validate power integrity faster and with greater confidence.

What you will learn:

  • How to efficiently configure multiple power networks using the updated Power Network Utility: easier multi-phase VRM assignment, visibility of sub-nets attached to the currently selected power net, default value model assignment for passive devices (inductors, resistors), and IBIS model support for resistor packs
  • How to use DC Current Sink assignment at the PI Pin Group level, which automatically distributes current to individual pins based on the PDN resistance matrix
  • How to run a DC Drop batch simulation across 10 to 20 power networks on a large design
  • How to interpret the new DC Drop Summary Report Table, a consolidated view of all simulated PDNs
  • How to navigate the new DC Metrics Viewer to visualize key metrics in 3D, including voltage drop, current density, via current, and power density

What is DC drop analysis?

DC drop analysis is the practice of validating power delivery across a PCB’s power distribution network (PDN) by simulating the voltage drop, current density, and via current between a voltage regulator and the components it powers. On a large design, a board can have dozens of power networks, which makes running these simulations and reviewing the results a significant engineering task. HyperLynx PI runs this DC Drop analysis in batch across a design’s power networks and reports the results through consolidated summary tables and metrics viewers.
