Overview
About PEL-2000A Series
The GW Instek PEL-2000A Series is a modular, multi-channel programmable DC electronic load built for power-supply design, quality inspection and characteristic certification. Instead of a single fixed box, it uses a mainframe-and-module structure: the PEL-2002A holds two load modules and the PEL-2004A holds four. Choose your modules to match the job, and the system covers everything from low-power dual-rail validation up to 0–500 V, 0–70 A and 350 W per module: with a fully loaded mainframe sinking up to 1.4 kVA and up to five linked mainframes reaching about 7 kW of total load capacity.
Every module supports CC, CR, CV, CV+CC and CP operating modes (constant current and constant resistance also run in dynamic mode), making the PEL-2000A a flexible DC electronic load for source validation, transient-response testing and automated production screening.

A modular DC electronic load: mainframe plus plug-in modules
The PEL-2000A is not a standalone load; its strength is configurability. You pick a 2-slot PEL-2002A or 4-slot PEL-2004A mainframe (which holds the master controller, display and interfaces) and then fit the load modules your bench needs. Modules cannot run without a mainframe, but the trade-off is flexibility: mix high-current, high-voltage and dual-channel modules in one chassis, run them independently or in parallel, and synchronise multi-channel sequences. When one chassis isn’t enough, link up to five mainframes (one master + four slaves) for around 7 kW of combined sinking capacity for high-power applications such as multi-output supplies, chargers and battery systems.
PEL-2000A load module lineup
| Module | Channels | Voltage | Current | Power | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PEL-2020A / 2020B | Dual (L/R) | 0–80 V | 0–2 A / 0–20 A per ch | 100 W × 2 | Dual-rail, general low-power testing |
| PEL-2030A / 2030B | Dual (L/R) | 1–80 V | 0–5 A / 0–40 A | 30 W + 250 W | Mixed low-current + medium-power rails |
| PEL-2040A / 2040B | Single | 0–80 V | 0–7 A / 0–70 A | 350 W | High-current loads, battery packs |
| PEL-2041A / 2041B | Single | 0–500 V | 0–1 A / 0–10 A | 350 W | High-voltage sources |
Each range (low/high) on every module has its own resolution and accuracy; for example the PEL-2040A high range reads back current to 1.4 mA and the PEL-2041A handles up to 500 V. GSAS helps you select the module combination, and the number of slots, that covers your present and near-future test requirements with margin.
Programmable DC load: CC, CR, CV and CP with dynamic operation
In constant-current (CC) mode the load draws a set current regardless of source voltage; constant-resistance (CR) emulates a fixed resistance; constant-voltage (CV / CV+CC) holds a target terminal voltage; and constant-power (CP) sinks a fixed wattage, ideal for verifying a supply at its rated power across its voltage range. CC and CR also run in dynamic mode, alternating between two levels (T1/T2) with step times from 0.025 ms to 30 s and a current slew rate up to 2.8 A/µs, so the PEL-2000A reproduces pulsed and transient current profiles for power-supply transient-response and load-step testing.
Battery load tester and discharge profiling
For battery and energy-storage work, a battery load tester must combine controlled current draw with safe, repeatable sequencing. The PEL-2000A’s CC and CP modes set a precise discharge current or power, while the sequence function and 12 programs of 10 panel-setup memories each let engineers script multi-step discharge profiles, for example stepping current to mimic a real load cycle. A GO/NoGo (pass/fail) judgement flags out-of-limit results automatically, and comprehensive protection guards both the load and the cell or pack under test during long discharge runs.
Protection and interfaces
The PEL-2000A includes six protection modes, Over-Current (OCP), Over-Voltage (OVP), Over-Power (OPP), Over-Temperature (OTP), Reverse-Voltage (RVP) and Under-Voltage (UVP) protection, to safeguard the load and the device under test. For remote control and data acquisition, the PEL-2000A provides USB Device/Host and RS-232C as standard, with GPIB (PEL-001 card) and LAN as options. The PEL-2000B mainframe adds a built-in LAN interface (and RS-485) as standard plus USB flash-drive support, with GPIB still optional, useful when remote bench access or networked logging is required. Both series are cross-compatible after firmware update, so modules and mainframes can be mixed.
Applications
The PEL-2000A Series suits engineering and production teams that need flexible, high-power DC loading:
- Power-supply design and validation: load-regulation, transient-response and constant-power testing across the full output range.
- Battery and charger testing: controlled discharge profiling, charge/discharge characterisation and pack validation.
- Production and incoming inspection: automated sequences with GO/NoGo judgement for repeatable pass/fail screening.
- High-voltage source testing: the 0–500 V PEL-2041A module for high-voltage supplies and converters.
- High-current and multi-output systems: parallel modules and chained mainframes for kilowatt-class loads.
These cover power electronics and EV, battery and energy storage, electronics manufacturing QA and R&D lab environments where configurable DC loading and automated test throughput both matter.
