About AEL-5000 Series

The GW Instek AEL-5000 Series is a programmable AC & DC electronic load for testing UPS systems, inverters, fuses and circuit breakers. The series spans 20 models, with single units from 1.875 kW to 22.5 kW across the 350 V, 425 V and 480 V voltage ratings, and up to eight units in parallel for single-phase loading to 180 kW or as a synchronised three-phase electronic load (Δ/Y) to 540 kW. Frequency coverage is DC and 40 – 440 Hz (the 480 V models cover 40 – 70 Hz), with loading and unloading phase-angle control from 0° to 359°. It is one of the highest-power programmable electronic load platforms GSAS Micro Systems supplies in India.

AEL-5000 AC & DC electronic load for UPS, inverter and protection-device testing

Unlike a DC-only load, the AEL-5000 is a true AC & DC electronic load: it operates from DC and across the 40 – 440 Hz AC range and provides six loading modes, constant current (CC), Linear CC, constant resistance (CR), constant voltage (CV), constant power (CP) and AC Rectifier Load. Loading and unloading phase-angle control (0 – 359°), SCR/TRIAC phase-modulation waveforms, and a Load-On-at-startup function let engineers verify the transient stability of an inverter or UPS exactly as a real appliance would stress it, including positive- or negative-half-cycle loading and inrush/surge conditions. As an AC electronic load it covers the test cases that a conventional DC load simply cannot.

Regenerative-grade load testing vs the dissipative AEL-5000: which do you need?

Engineers searching for a regenerative AC/DC load are usually looking for a high-power load that can either recover energy to the grid or simply absorb large AC and DC power reliably. It is worth being precise: the AEL-5000 is a dissipative load, not a grid-tied regenerative one, it converts the absorbed power to heat and is safeguarded by over-voltage, over-current, over-power and over-temperature protection across the whole series. For the vast majority of UPS, inverter, battery, fuse and breaker qualification work, a dissipative load delivers regenerative-grade load testing at the test points that matter, and the AEL-5000’s AC Rectifier Load Mode (below) covers the non-linear cases, at a fraction of the capital cost and grid-interconnection effort of a true regenerative system. If your duty cycle genuinely requires energy recovery, the GSAS team can advise on the right solution rather than over-specifying.

AC Rectifier Load Mode: non-linear UPS and PV-inverter efficiency testing

The dedicated AC Rectifier Load Mode reproduces the non-linear loading behaviour of switch-mode supplies and rectifier front-ends, simulating the real electronic equipment connected to a UPS or PV inverter. GW Instek specifies a Non-Linear mode for UPS efficiency measurement and a Resistive + Non-Linear mode for PV-inverter efficiency measurement, so both efficiency tests can be run on one instrument without assembling a separate non-linear load bank. Built-in test modes extend this to UPS efficiency, PV-inverter efficiency, UPS back-up time, battery discharge time, UPS transfer time, fuse/breaker trip / non-trip, short-circuit simulation, OCP and OPP workflows. For the exact efficiency standard your qualification programme targets, GSAS will confirm the test method against the current GW Instek datasheet.

Turbo Mode: 2× current and power for transient and short-circuit tests

Turbo Mode (selectable ON/OFF) lets the load withstand twice its rated current and power within one second. For tests that demand a brief surge of high power and large current, transient overload of protective components, fuse/breaker and AC-source short-circuit simulation, and OCP/OPP verification, Turbo Mode delivers the peak without sizing the load for that peak continuously, which is the most economical way to cover these cases. An adjustable bandwidth (BW) setting tames oscillation when the DUT and load bandwidths do not match.

The AEL-5000 model lineup

The 20 models are grouped by voltage rating; current and power scale with the model number, and Turbo Mode doubles both within one second. The table below shows the 350 V (50–350 Vrms / 500 Vdc) family, the 425 V (50–425 Vrms / 600 Vdc) and 480 V (50–480 Vrms / 700 Vdc) families share the same power/current steps under matching -425- and -480- part numbers.

Model (350 V)Rated current (Arms)Power, Turbo OFFPower, Turbo ON (×2)

AEL-5023-350-112.5112.522.5 kW45.0 kW

Higher single-unit power (15 kW, 18.75 kW, 22.5 kW) is reached on the 112.5 Arms models, and any single rating scales further by combining up to eight units in single-phase (180 kW) or as a three-phase electronic load (540 kW) parallel array. GSAS helps you select the voltage rating, per-unit power and parallel configuration that match your test envelope with margin.

Applications

The AEL-5000’s AC & DC loading, non-linear rectifier mode, Turbo Mode and parallel scalability make it well suited to:

  • UPS testing: efficiency, back-up-time and transfer-time measurement with non-linear loading.
  • Inverter and PV-inverter testing: resistive-plus-non-linear efficiency measurement, transient response, inrush and surge verification.
  • Fuse and circuit-breaker qualification: trip / non-trip and short-circuit simulation with Turbo Mode and time measurement.
  • AC power source and battery testing: discharge-time, OCP and OPP characterisation across DC and 40–440 Hz.
  • High-power production qualification: single-phase 180 kW and three-phase 540 kW parallel arrays for power-electronics manufacturing lines.

Power-electronics teams testing UPS units, on-board chargers, solar and motor-drive inverters, and protection devices use the AEL-5000 for both bench characterisation and high-power production qualification, starting with a single chassis and scaling to parallel single-phase or three-phase arrays as test power grows. It is a core instrument for EV and energy-systems and industrial automation test programmes. To complete a UPS or inverter test bench, pair the AEL-5000 with the GW Instek ASR-6500 programmable AC source; for DC-only loading, the GW Instek PEL-5000G and PEL-3000A programmable DC loads cover the same workflows on the DC side.

Common questions about AEL-5000 Series

How much does the GW Instek AEL-5000 cost in India?
The AEL-5000 price in India depends on the model you configure, there are 20 models across 350 V, 425 V and 480 V ratings and 1.875 kW to 22.5 kW per unit, plus any parallel-array chassis and optional GPIB / RS-232 / USB / LAN interface you add. Is the AEL-5000 a regenerative AC/DC load or a dissipative load?
The AEL-5000 is a dissipative (heat-dissipating) AC & DC electronic load, not a power-recovery / grid-tied regenerative load, it converts absorbed energy to heat and is protected by over-voltage, over-current, over-power and over-temperature monitoring. For most UPS, inverter, fuse and breaker qualification work a dissipative load delivers regenerative-grade load testing without grid-tie complexity, and its AC Rectifier Load Mode reproduces real non-linear loading for UPS and PV-inverter efficiency measurement. GSAS can advise whether a dissipative AEL-5000 or a regenerative grid-tied solution fits your application and duty cycle.
What makes the AEL-5000 different from a DC-only electronic load?
The AEL-5000 is a true AC & DC electronic load: it operates from DC and across 40–440 Hz, supports CC, Linear CC, CR, CV, CP and a dedicated AC Rectifier Load Mode, and lets you set the loading and unloading phase angle from 0° to 359°. It also adds Turbo Mode for 2× current and power within one second for fuse/breaker, OCP and OPP transient tests, plus built-in UPS-efficiency, PV-inverter-efficiency, back-up-time and trip-test modes, capabilities a plain DC load cannot provide. For DC-only requirements GSAS also supplies the GW Instek PEL series of programmable DC loads.
How many AEL-5000 units can run in parallel and at what total power?
Up to eight AEL-5000 units operate in master-slave parallel. Single-phase parallel reaches 180 kW total, and three-phase Δ or Y synchronised loading reaches 540 kW total. A lab can start with one chassis and scale up as test-power requirements grow without changing its workflow.
What does the AEL-5000 AC Rectifier Load Mode do?
The AC Rectifier Load Mode reproduces the non-linear loading behaviour of switch-mode supplies and rectifier front-ends, simulating the real electronic equipment connected to a UPS or PV inverter. GW Instek specifies a Non-Linear mode for UPS efficiency measurement and a Resistive + Non-Linear mode for PV-inverter efficiency measurement, so both can be characterised on one instrument without assembling a separate non-linear load bank. For the exact efficiency-test standard your programme must satisfy, GSAS Micro Systems will confirm against the current GW Instek datasheet.
