About Microtest DC Bias Current Source (6210-6243H)

The Microtest 6210-6243H DC Bias Current Source series provides standalone DC bias current sources for inductor and magnetic component characterization under real-world current loading conditions. The models span 20 A on the single-unit 6225 up to 640 A on the sixteen-unit 6243H, covering everything from small signal inductors to high-current power inductors used in automotive DC-DC converters, server power supplies, and industrial motor drives.

Pairing and Frequency Response

Frequency response depends on the instrument they pair with: 100 Hz to 10 MHz with the 6632 impedance analyzer on the 6223, 6243, and 6243H, 100 Hz to 3 MHz on the 6210, 6220, 6225, and 6240, and 100 Hz to 500 kHz or 200 kHz with the 6356 and 6355 LCR meters. These modules pair with Microtest LCR meters and impedance analyzers to measure inductance roll-off (saturation curves) as DC bias current increases. This characterization is essential for power inductor selection and validation: an inductor that meets its nominal inductance value at zero current may lose 30-50% of its inductance at rated current. Selecting the right model means matching both the peak bias current the part will see in circuit and the test frequency the paired analyzer must reach.

Applications

Power inductor manufacturers, automotive magnetics suppliers, server power supply designers, and EV charger component producers all rely on DC bias characterization to verify inductor performance under load. The modular approach allows test laboratories to configure exactly the current capacity their application requires, without investing in a fixed high-current system from the start.
