About Microtest 7750 Series Impulse Winding Tester

The Microtest 7750 Series Impulse Winding Tester detects turn-to-turn insulation defects in coils, transformers, motors, and solenoids using high-voltage impulse testing with a 200 MHz sampling rate. Operating across 10 V to 10,000 V test voltage, the 7750 applies a fast-rise impulse to the winding under test and captures the resulting damped oscillation waveform, comparing it against a known-good reference to identify shorted turns, insulation breakdown, and winding faults that conventional hipot testing cannot detect.

High-Resolution Waveform Capture

The 200 MHz sampling rate resolves waveform differences down to inductance changes as small as 0.1 µH, catching single-turn faults in low-inductance coils that lower-bandwidth impulse testers miss. At 10 tests per second, the 7750 supports high-throughput production testing of motors, ignition coils, relay coils, and power transformers.

Multiple Detection Algorithms

Multiple comparison algorithms (area, differential area, flutter, corona) provide complementary detection methods for different fault types. Area comparison catches gross defects, differential analysis detects subtle waveform shifts from single-turn shorts, flutter analysis identifies intermittent faults from marginal insulation contacts, and corona detection distinguishes partial discharge from full insulation breakdown. Tolerance bands are configurable per test point, allowing engineers to set sensitivity appropriate to each winding type.

Applications

Motor manufacturers, transformer producers, ignition coil winding facilities, relay coil manufacturers, and solenoid assemblers all deploy impulse winding testing for 100% production verification. Impulse winding testing is increasingly required by automotive and industrial OEM quality specifications as the definitive method for detecting turn-to-turn insulation defects.
