Excitation Current and Core Loss Measurement

Excitation current measurement reveals core defects, improper air gaps, and material degradation that other tests miss: a transformer with correct turns ratio and adequate insulation can still fail in the field if core losses are excessive or excitation current is anomalous. The built-in AC source applies the actual operating voltage and frequency to the primary winding, measuring the resulting excitation current profile.
