About Keil MDK Community

Indian electrical engineering student at a Bengaluru university lab learning Cortex-M development on Arm Keil MDK Community, the non-commercial student edition

Keil MDK Community is the no-cost edition of Arm Keil MDK v6, licensed by Arm for students, personal learning, and other non-commercial use only. It is not a free route to shipping a product. The moment your firmware goes into anything commercial, Arm’s terms require a licensed edition, and in India that edition is Keil MDK Essential, supplied by GSAS with INR procurement and local Arm engineering support.

If you are an Indian product team, get an MDK Essential quote now. If you are a student learning Cortex-M, the rest of this page explains exactly what Community covers and where its licence stops.

Community is for students and non-commercial use only

Per Arm’s licensing terms, Keil MDK Community may be used only for non-commercial purposes: learning, academic coursework, personal projects, and evaluation. It is the right tool for an engineering student at an IIT, NIT, or IIIT campus writing their first Cortex-M firmware, and the wrong tool the instant that work becomes a product, a paid consulting deliverable, or company IP.

For that non-commercial audience, Community includes:

  • No code-size limit. Community is the full Cortex-M compiler, not the old 32 KB Keil-Lite evaluation.
  • Not a time-limited evaluation build. It is the current Community edition, licensed for non-commercial use.
  • The full modern toolchain: Keil Studio (VS Code), µVision, Arm Compiler 6, Arm Toolchain for Embedded, the CMSIS-Pack ecosystem, and support for the latest Cortex-M and Armv8.1-M cores including Cortex-M52 / M55 / M85 with Helium.

Where Community stops:

  • No commercial use. Any product, revenue-generating, or company-owned work needs MDK Essential or MDK Professional.
  • No Arm support entitlement. Questions go to the community forum at community.arm.com; Arm engineering does not handle Community-tier tickets.
  • No supported escalation path. A blocking bug has no route beyond community-forum discussion; there is no Arm support ticket to raise.

Shipping a product? Move to MDK Essential

The signal that you have left Community’s licence behind is simple: your work has become commercial. That covers an Indian startup taking hardware through CE or FCC certification, a university spin-off where the IP moves into a company, or any engagement where you bill a client for firmware.

At that point Keil MDK Essential is the entry commercial tier, and it adds exactly what Community withholds:

  • A full commercial licence for Cortex-M product development, with no non-commercial restriction.
  • Arm support entitlement: commercial-grade tickets handled by Arm engineering, plus an ongoing bug-fix release stream.
  • User-Based Licensing (UBL): one subscription per developer, usable on any machine, with headless CI/CD build entitlement included.
  • MDK-Middleware v8 (Network, USB, File System, Graphics), free for all Cortex-M users.

Essential keeps everything you already know from Community, the same Keil Studio and µVision IDEs, the same Arm Compiler 6, the same CMSIS-Pack projects, so moving a codebase across is a licence change, not a rewrite.

Why Indian teams buy MDK Essential from GSAS

  • INR procurement: GeM, SAP Ariba, Coupa, and TReDS supported, with GST-compliant invoicing.
  • UBL provisioning: entitlement setup, activation walkthrough, and CI bot configuration done with you.
  • Local Arm engineering: toolchain guidance, debug-probe selection, and CMSIS-Pack adoption from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR.
  • Free pre-sales smoke-test: we run MDK Essential on your existing project before you commit, surfacing porting issues in days.
  • Authorized Arm engineering partner since 2018.
