About RYLR993 LoRaWAN Dual-Mode Module

The REYAX RYLR993 is a dual-mode wireless module that supports both LoRaWAN (Class A and Class C) and proprietary peer-to-peer communication on a single Semtech SX1262 platform. This dual-mode capability addresses a common deployment challenge: LoRaWAN provides standardized, managed network connectivity through public or private gateways, while proprietary P2P mode enables direct device-to-device communication without gateway infrastructure. The RYLR993 switches between modes via AT commands over UART, allowing a single hardware design to serve both network architectures depending on the deployment scenario.

LoRaWAN and P2P: Two Modes, One Module

LoRaWAN mode connects the RYLR993 to standard LoRaWAN network servers (The Things Network, Chirpstack, AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN, and other compliant platforms) using Over-The-Air Activation (OTAA) or Activation By Personalization (ABP). Class A provides the lowest power consumption for battery-operated sensors that transmit periodically and receive downlinks only in short windows after each uplink. Class C keeps the receive window open continuously, enabling low-latency downlink commands for actuators, switches, and devices that have access to mains power.

Proprietary P2P mode bypasses the LoRaWAN protocol stack entirely, enabling direct device-to-device LoRa communication with minimal latency and no dependency on gateway infrastructure. This mode is valuable for deployments where gateway coverage is not yet available, for local control loops that require faster response than LoRaWAN’s duty-cycle-constrained uplink/downlink timing allows, and for simple point-to-point links between two devices where the complexity of LoRaWAN network management is unnecessary.

The AT command interface over UART maintains the integration simplicity that characterizes all REYAX modules. Hardware teams configure network parameters, switch between LoRaWAN and P2P modes, set transmit power, and manage device credentials through serial commands without developing custom firmware or integrating an RF protocol stack. FCC and CE pre-certification eliminates the need for separate RF regulatory testing when the module is used as a certified component within a host product.

Deployment Scenarios

Smart city infrastructure projects deploying LoRaWAN-connected parking sensors, street lighting controllers, and environmental monitors benefit from the RYLR993’s LoRaWAN mode for managed network connectivity. Agricultural sensor networks in remote areas where LoRaWAN gateways are not yet deployed use P2P mode for direct sensor-to-collector communication, with the option to migrate to LoRaWAN as gateway coverage expands. Industrial monitoring systems that require both cloud-connected telemetry (LoRaWAN) and local alarm communication between machines (P2P) use the dual-mode capability to serve both requirements from a single module. Building automation projects deploy the RYLR993 in LoRaWAN mode for cloud-connected energy monitoring and switch to P2P mode for local control loops that need sub-second response times.

GSAS Micro Systems provides REYAX RYLR993 modules from Indian inventory with INR invoicing, along with LoRaWAN network planning guidance, gateway selection support, and integration consulting for dual-mode IoT deployments across India.
