Overview
About J-Trace PRO

The J-Trace PRO is SEGGER’s top-of-the-line streaming trace probe, supporting Arm Cortex-M, Cortex-A, Cortex-R, and RISC-V architectures from a single device. With USB 3.0 SuperSpeed and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, it delivers continuous streaming trace with zero data loss, capturing every instruction executed on the target for complete execution visibility that breakpoint-based debugging cannot provide.

Streaming Trace and On-Board Buffer
The J-Trace PRO captures trace data at up to 150 MHz trace clock (300 MHz TPIU frequency) on a 4-bit trace port, streaming it to the host in real time over USB 3.0 SuperSpeed. A 64 MB on-board trace buffer ensures that no data is lost when USB bandwidth is momentarily insufficient, allowing long-running trace sessions without gaps. This combination of streaming and buffered trace means developers can record complete execution histories spanning millions of instructions, essential for reproducing timing-dependent bugs and race conditions that disappear under breakpoint debugging.
Trace Protocol Support
The J-Trace PRO supports the full range of Arm and RISC-V trace protocols:
| Protocol | Function |
|---|---|
| ETM | Cycle-accurate instruction trace for Cortex-M/A/R |
| ETB | Embedded Trace Buffer readout |
| PTM | Program Trace Macrocell for Cortex-A/R |
| ITM | Instrumentation Trace, software event and printf trace |
| SWO | Serial Wire Output at up to 100 MHz |
| DWT | Data Watchpoint and Trace, data access and cycle counting |
| MTB | Micro Trace Buffer for Cortex-M0/M0+ |
| N-Trace BTM | Branch Trace for RISC-V cores |
Code Coverage and Execution Profiling
Hardware-based code coverage extracts MC/DC, branch, and statement metrics directly from the trace stream, supporting safety certification under IEC 61508, ISO 26262, and DO-178C without requiring code instrumentation that alters timing behavior. Execution profiling identifies function-level hotspots and timing bottlenecks in real time, enabling data-driven optimization of performance-critical firmware.
J-Trace PRO vs J-Trace PRO Cortex-M
The J-Trace PRO Cortex-M is a dedicated variant that supports Cortex-M0 through M85 cores at a lower price point. The full J-Trace PRO extends architecture coverage to Cortex-A, Cortex-R, and RISC-V in addition to Cortex-M, and adds Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and PTM trace support, making it the right choice for teams working across multiple core families or requiring network-attached trace infrastructure.
J-Trace PRO vs Lauterbach TRACE32
For Arm Cortex-M/A/R and RISC-V instruction trace specifically, SEGGER J-Trace PRO offers more or less similar core capability to Lauterbach TRACE32, non-intrusive streaming trace, hardware coverage, and profiling, at a materially lower cost point. J-Trace PRO ships as one probe with Ozone, J-Flash, and full J-Link debug included at no added license, while TRACE32 is Lauterbach’s modular, architecture-agnostic platform: a PowerDebug base plus swappable debug and trace modules purchased per architecture. That modularity is the source of Lauterbach’s real strength. TRACE32 covers well over 150 architectures, including Renesas RH850 and Infineon TriCore/AURIX where it is the industry standard, with heterogeneous multicore debug and OS or hypervisor-aware debugging (AUTOSAR, Bao, RTA-HVR) that J-Trace PRO does not offer (lauterbach.com). J-Trace PRO does not support RH850 in any form; per SEGGER’s own supported-devices database, RH850 debug and trace sit outside both J-Link and J-Trace, and SEGGER’s RH850 coverage lives instead in its Flasher production-programming line (segger.com).
| Dimension | J-Trace PRO | TRACE32 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture scope | Arm Cortex-M/A/R, RISC-V | 150+ architectures incl. RH850, TriCore/AURIX, PowerPC, Xtensa, ARC | TRACE32 covers a much broader architecture range, per lauterbach.com |
| On-probe trace memory | 64 MB on-board buffer, continuous USB 3.0 streaming | 1 GB (PowerTrace II Lite) up to 8 GB (PowerTrace III / Serial 2) | Per lauterbach.com |
| Debug depth | Full J-Link debug, single architecture family per probe | Heterogeneous multicore, OS-aware, hypervisor-aware debug | TRACE32 debugs mixed-architecture cores together, per lauterbach.com |
| Pricing model | List prices published on SEGGER’s web shop | Configured and quoted per project via Lauterbach sales | segger.com / lauterbach.com |
For Indian teams whose target silicon is entirely Arm Cortex-M/A/R or RISC-V, J-Trace PRO reaches the same core trace-evidence outcome as a TRACE32 setup at a lower cost point, with the debugger and programmer already in the box. Teams whose bench includes RH850, TriCore/AURIX, or another architecture outside that set, or that need heterogeneous multicore and hypervisor-aware debug, are well served by TRACE32’s broader coverage. GSAS Micro Systems offers J-Trace PRO in India with competitive pricing and short lead times; GSAS does not carry the Lauterbach TRACE32 platform.
