Overview
About Questa FPGA Essentials (QuestaSim FPGA Edition)

Questa FPGA Essentials is the Siemens EDA FPGA-targeted simulation and verification bundle, built on the Questa simulator that Indian FPGA teams have used for years under the QuestaSim and ModelSim names. It pairs mixed-language HDL simulation with waveform-based debugging and an optional RTL lint add-on, giving FPGA design teams a single environment for functional verification.
Siemens has consolidated its verification portfolio under the Questa One brand. The former Questa hub now returns an HTTP 301 redirect to the Questa One page, and the ModelSim URL redirects to Questa One Sim. Siemens describes Questa One Sim as bringing “cornerstone Questa simulation technologies into a platform that is geared towards solving challenges faced by semiconductor companies designing the next generation of SoC’s, ASIC’s and FPGAs”.
SystemVerilog, VHDL, and mixed-language simulation support means compatibility with any design methodology, while Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) support enables reusable, scalable testbenches that prepare teams for ASIC verification with the same methodology. Pre-configured libraries for the major FPGA families including AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, and Microchip mean verification environments work without manual library setup.
The Questa Core + Lint bundle adds RTL lint analysis that catches coding errors, synthesis mismatches, and style violations before simulation, shifting quality left in the verification process. The lint bundle identifies common RTL quality issues including undriven signals, width mismatches, combinational loops, incomplete sensitivity lists, and synthesis-simulation mismatches, providing actionable findings before simulation begins.
Key Features
- Mixed-Language Simulation: SystemVerilog, VHDL, Verilog, and mixed-language simulation. No language limitations regardless of your design methodology.
- UVM Support: Universal Verification Methodology support for reusable, scalable testbenches. Build verification environments that transition from FPGA to ASIC.
- Waveform Debugging: Off-line waveform-based debugging without re-running simulation. Navigate complex designs with search and filtering.
- Root Cause Analysis: Debug tooling to help identify the source of failures rather than only the symptom.
- Lint Bundle: Questa Core + Lint adds RTL quality checks for coding errors, synthesis mismatches, undriven signals, and style violations before simulation.
- FPGA Vendor Libraries: Pre-configured for AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, and Microchip FPGA families. Works without manual library setup.
- Migration Path: A conversion path for teams currently on ModelSim or Questa Base, so existing scripts and testbenches carry forward.
- Part of the Questa One Family: Built on the Questa simulator line that Siemens now brands as Questa One. Siemens publishes a 3x reduction in verification coverage closure time and a 10x reduction in the verification of design changes for Questa.

| Language Support | VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog, mixed-language |
| UVM | Universal Verification Methodology support |
| Bundles | Questa Core, Questa Core + Lint |
| Debug | Off-line waveform debugging with search/filter |
| Lint | RTL lint for coding style, synthesis checks, signal quality |
| FPGA Libraries | AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, Microchip |
| Migration | ModelSim and Questa Base to Questa Core conversion |
| Wider family | Questa One (Simulation suite, Verification IQ, Avery VIP, Agentic Toolkit) |
Target Applications
- FPGA Design Verification: Simulate and verify FPGA designs with mixed-language support and integrated waveform debug.
- RTL Code Quality: Lint analysis catches coding errors, synthesis mismatches, and style violations before simulation, shifting quality left across the RTL codebase.
- UVM Testbenches: Build reusable, scalable verification environments with UVM support. Prepare for ASIC verification with the same methodology and testbench investment.
- Multi-FPGA Systems: Verify systems spanning multiple FPGAs with unified simulation and cross-module debug.
QuestaSim vs Questa vs Questa One: What’s the Difference?
If you have been searching for QuestaSim in India, the naming has moved more than once, and Siemens’ own redirects are the clearest guide.
The lineage:
- ModelSim: the original Mentor Graphics HDL simulator, widely used in Indian FPGA teams since the 1990s. Its Siemens URL now 301-redirects to the Questa One Sim page.
- QuestaSim: the Mentor Graphics rebrand of ModelSim Advanced, which added SystemVerilog and UVM support.
- Questa: the umbrella brand Siemens EDA used after acquiring Mentor Graphics. The Questa hub URL now 301-redirects to Questa One.
- Questa One: the current Siemens brand for the smart verification solution, spanning the Questa One Simulation suite, Verification IQ, Avery verification IP, static and formal analysis, and the Questa One Agentic Toolkit.
- Questa FPGA Essentials: the FPGA-targeted bundle GSAS supplies in India, containing the Questa simulator plus optional RTL lint, for FPGA verification workflows.
So when you search for “QuestaSim”, “Questa Sim”, “Questa simulator”, or “QuestaSim FPGA edition”, Questa FPGA Essentials is the bundle to look at for FPGA designs. For the full ASIC-scale verification portfolio, the brand to ask about is Questa One.
Why RTL Lint Belongs in an FPGA Verification Flow
The Questa Core + Lint bundle identifies undriven signals, width mismatches, combinational loops, incomplete sensitivity lists, and synthesis-simulation mismatches before simulation begins. These are exactly the defect classes that are cheap to fix at the RTL stage and expensive to chase through a waveform after a regression failure.
For FPGA teams across India working in defence, telecom, automotive, and industrial domains, that shift-left step matters most where simulation cycles are the scarce resource. Every bug lint catches is a simulation run that does not need to be spent finding it. Teams building toward ASIC verification get a second benefit: the same lint discipline and the same UVM testbench structure carry forward if a design later moves from FPGA to ASIC.
