Overview
About Promira eSPI Analysis Application
The eSPI Analysis Application is a firmware license for the Promira Serial Platform that enables real-time capture, display, and monitoring of eSPI (Enhanced Serial Peripheral Interface) bus communication at clock speeds up to 66 MHz in Single, Dual, and Quad I/O modes. eSPI is the Intel-defined successor to LPC (Low Pin Count) used in modern PC platforms for communication between the Platform Controller Hub (PCH) and Embedded Controllers (EC), Super I/O chips, TPM modules, and SPI flash devices.
eSPI Analysis Capabilities
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Clock Speed | Up to 66 MHz |
| I/O Modes | Single, Dual, Quad |
| eSPI Channels | Peripheral, Virtual Wire, OOB, Flash, Independent |
| Slave Selects | Up to 2 monitored simultaneously |
| Alert Lines | Up to 2 monitored |
| Reset Lines | Up to 2 monitored |
| Trigger | Match triggers on eSPI transactions |
| Filtering | Hardware-level packet filtering |
| Statistics | Real-time bus utilization and error tracking |

The eSPI Analysis Application monitors up to 5 eSPI channels simultaneously, Peripheral (memory/I/O read/write), Virtual Wire (GPIO and interrupt signaling), Out-of-Band (SMBus-like messaging), Flash (SPI flash access tunneling), and Independent (custom vendor-defined). By capturing all channels in parallel with hardware-level triggering and filtering, the Promira provides visibility into the full eSPI communication stack that is unavailable from logic analyzers without eSPI protocol awareness.
Use Cases
- PCH-to-EC debugging: Capture eSPI transactions between Intel/AMD Platform Controller Hubs and Embedded Controllers during BIOS/firmware development.
- TPM communication analysis: Monitor eSPI-connected Trusted Platform Modules for secure boot and attestation protocol debugging.
- eSPI flash access: Analyze flash channel traffic to verify SPI flash read/write operations tunneled over the eSPI bus.
- Virtual Wire monitoring: Track GPIO state changes and interrupt signaling between PCH and EC for power management and platform event debugging.
The eSPI Analysis Application requires a Promira Serial Platform (sold separately) and is installed as a firmware license. The Promira’s FPGA-based architecture allows running eSPI analysis alongside other applications (I2C, SPI Active/Analysis) on the same hardware. Data capture is displayed in the free Data Center Software with eSPI-specific protocol decoding.
