Overview
About Promira Serial Platform
The Promira Serial Platform is the world’s first I2C/SPI master or slave with eSPI simulator and built-in I2C, SPI, and eSPI protocol analysis (bus sniffing) in a single instrument. Built on a completely new FPGA-based architecture, it delivers 80 MHz SPI master with Dual and Quad I/O (10x faster than Aardvark), 3.4 MHz I2C High-Speed mode in both master and slave roles (4x faster), and 66 MHz eSPI analysis, all with integrated programmable level shifting from 0.9V to 3.45V (5V tolerant) that eliminates external level shifters.

Protocol Support
| Protocol | Mode | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| SPI | Master (active) | Up to 80 MHz, Dual/Quad I/O |
| SPI | Analysis (sniff) | Up to 40 MHz |
| I2C | Master + Slave (active) | Up to 3.4 MHz (HS mode) |
| I2C | Analysis (sniff) | Up to 5 MHz |
| eSPI | Analysis + Simulation | Up to 66 MHz Quad I/O |
| SMBus / PMBus | Master + Slave | Via I2C engine |
| GPIO | 16 configurable | Digital I/O |
| Slave Selects | 8 outputs | Hardware-controlled |
| Level Shifting | Integrated | 0.9V to 3.45V (5V tolerant) |
| Host Interface | USB 2.0 + Gigabit Ethernet | Bench or rack-mount |

Dual host interfaces, USB 2.0 for bench use and Gigabit Ethernet for rack-mounted production and automated test systems, enable flexible deployment across lab and manufacturing environments. Up to 16 GPIOs and 8 SPI slave select outputs address complex multi-device configurations without external MUX hardware. Cross-platform APIs in C, C++, C#, Python, .NET, and VB.NET enable custom automation through the well-documented Promira API. Field-upgradable firmware allows purchasing I2C, SPI, and eSPI application capabilities separately as needed. For teams that have outgrown the Aardvark or need eSPI support for next-generation platform controller hubs, the Promira replaces Aardvark + Cheetah with a single, faster, more capable instrument backed by 32-bit and 64-bit API support.
Application Licenses
The Promira’s FPGA-based architecture enables purchasing only the protocol capabilities you need today and adding more as requirements evolve. Each application is a firmware license that enables specific protocol features on the hardware.
| Application | Tier | Key Capability | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| I2C Active | Level 1 | Master/slave emulation | Up to 400 kHz |
| I2C Active | Level 2 | Full HS mode master/slave | Up to 3.4 MHz |
| SPI Active | Level 1 | Standard SPI master | Up to 8 MHz |
| SPI Active | Level 2 | Fast SPI master | Up to 40 MHz |
| SPI Active | Level 3 | Max speed + Dual/Quad I/O | Up to 80 MHz |
| I2C Analysis | Monitor | Passive I2C bus capture | Up to 5 MHz |
| SPI Analysis | Level 1 | Passive SPI bus capture | Up to 24 MHz |
| SPI Analysis | Level 2 | High-speed SPI capture | Up to 40 MHz |
| eSPI Analysis | Advanced | eSPI bus decode + capture | Up to 66 MHz |
The analysis applications turn the Promira into both a host adapter and a protocol analyzer in one instrument, replacing what previously required separate Aardvark/Cheetah (host adapter) and Beagle I2C/SPI (analyzer) purchases. This “all-in-one” capability earned Total Phase the Embedded World North America “Best in Show” award.
The Promira’s Gigabit Ethernet interface is particularly significant for production environments where USB cable length limitations and hub reliability create bottlenecks. By connecting the Promira directly to the factory network, programming stations can be placed exactly where needed on the production floor and managed remotely from a central engineering workstation.
