Why Geofencing Matters for Indian Fleet Operations

Geofencing, defining virtual geographic boundaries and triggering actions when vehicles enter or exit those zones, is one of the most immediately practical features of vehicle telematics. For Indian fleet operators, geofencing addresses several operational challenges that are difficult to manage manually across large, distributed fleets.

Unauthorised vehicle use: detect vehicles operating outside their assigned zones during off-hours. A delivery vehicle assigned to the Bengaluru metro area that appears in Mysuru on a Sunday warrants investigation.

Route compliance: verify that vehicles follow assigned routes. For tanker fleets, cash-in-transit vehicles, and school buses, route deviation is not just an efficiency issue, it is a security and safety concern.

Arrival and departure tracking: automatically log when vehicles arrive at and depart from customer sites, warehouses, fuel stations, and maintenance facilities. This data feeds into proof-of-delivery systems, service level tracking, and turnaround time analysis.

Zone-based operational rules: enforce different speed limits or operational parameters in different zones. A speed limit of 80 km/h on highways may reduce to 40 km/h in residential areas near schools.

Setting Up Geofences with AutoPi

Geofence Types

Circular zones: defined by a centre point (latitude, longitude) and radius. Simple to configure, suitable for point locations: depots, customer sites, fuel stations, toll plazas.

Polygonal zones: defined by a series of vertices forming a polygon. Suitable for complex geographic areas: city boundaries, industrial zones, restricted areas, delivery territories.

Route corridors: a buffered path along an assigned route. The vehicle must stay within a configurable distance (e.g., 500 metres) of the planned route. Any deviation triggers an alert.

Alert Configuration

For each geofence, configure:

  • Entry alert: notification when the vehicle enters the zone
  • Exit alert: notification when the vehicle leaves the zone
  • Dwell time alert: notification when the vehicle remains inside a zone beyond a threshold duration
  • Speed alert: notification when the vehicle exceeds a zone-specific speed limit
  • Time-based rules: geofences active only during specific hours (e.g., alert on vehicle movement between 10 PM and 6 AM)

Alerts deliver via the AutoPi Cloud dashboard, email, webhook, or REST API integration with the fleet operator’s existing systems.

Practical Use Cases

Depot Management

Define geofences around all depot locations, Bengaluru main depot, Chennai transit hub, Hyderabad regional warehouse, Pune distribution centre, Mumbai port facility. Track:

  • Vehicle arrival and departure times for turnaround time analysis
  • Vehicles that bypass the depot (skip scheduled loading/unloading)
  • Overnight vehicle parking compliance (all vehicles must be in a designated depot or parking zone)

Customer Site Proof-of-Delivery

Geofence customer delivery locations and automatically log arrival and departure timestamps. This data integrates with delivery management systems to provide proof-of-delivery timestamps without manual driver input, reducing disputes and improving billing accuracy.

Fuel Station Monitoring

Geofence authorised fuel stations. Alert when a vehicle visits an unauthorised station (potential fuel diversion) or when a vehicle visits a station but the OBD-II fuel level data does not show a corresponding increase (potential fuel receipt fraud).

Restricted Zone Enforcement

Define exclusion zones where vehicles should not operate, residential areas during night hours, bridge weight-restricted zones, pedestrian zones, competitor premises. Alert immediately when a vehicle enters a restricted zone.

Inter-City Route Compliance

For vehicles operating on fixed inter-city routes, Bengaluru to Chennai, Pune to Mumbai, Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam: define route corridors and monitor for deviations. Route deviation may indicate:

  • Unauthorised stops or detours
  • Driver taking a longer route (fuel waste, time waste)
  • Road closure forcing an alternate route (legitimate deviation)

Context from the alert allows the dispatcher to assess whether the deviation requires action.
