Why CAN Bus Data Logging Matters for Indian Fleets
India’s commercial vehicle fleet, trucks, buses, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, generates vast amounts of operational data through the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Engine RPM, fuel consumption, brake pressure, transmission temperature, exhaust gas readings, and dozens of other parameters flow continuously on the CAN bus during vehicle operation. Capturing this data enables predictive maintenance, fuel optimisation, driver behaviour analysis, and regulatory compliance.
Traditional fleet management systems use proprietary black-box devices that extract a limited set of OBD-II parameters. These devices are closed, the fleet operator gets a dashboard but cannot access raw CAN frames, cannot add custom DBC files for non-standard parameters, and cannot run edge processing on the device itself.
AutoPi: Open Platform CAN Bus Telematics
AutoPi (Aalborg, Denmark) takes a fundamentally different approach. The AutoPi telematics gateway, available as the CAN-FD Pro for high-speed CAN FD networks, or the TMU CM4 for standard CAN, connects directly to the vehicle’s OBD-II port and provides full programmatic access to the CAN bus via SocketCAN on Linux.
Key capabilities for Indian fleet deployments:
- Raw CAN frame access: read every CAN ID on the bus, not just standard OBD-II PIDs
- DBC file support: import manufacturer-specific DBC files to decode proprietary CAN signals
- Edge processing: run Docker containers on the device for local data filtering, aggregation, and alert generation
- 4G/LTE connectivity: transmit processed data to cloud platforms over Indian cellular networks
- AutoPi Cloud: fleet-scale device management, OTA updates, and data visualisation
Applications in India
- Fleet operators: monitor fuel consumption, driver behaviour, and maintenance schedules across hundreds of vehicles
- Automotive OEMs: field data acquisition for warranty analysis and product improvement
- EV developers: battery state-of-charge monitoring, thermal management data, charging session logging
- Agricultural equipment: tractor and harvester operational data for precision agriculture
