About Arm Development Studio

Arm Development Studio is the development platform that engineering teams reach for when their Cortex-A, Cortex-R, or Neoverse project demands bare-metal and Linux debugging, CoreSight-based hardware trace via DSTREAM-ST or DSTREAM-PT, system-wide performance analysis, and safety-certified compilation, all in a single integrated environment. Where Keil MDK focuses on Cortex-M microcontrollers, Development Studio addresses the complex multi-core, multi-OS environments behind automotive ECUs, aerospace flight controllers, networking equipment, and server-class SoCs.

Gold Edition provides the full development environment with AC6 + ATfE Pro, debugger, Streamline performance analyzer, and CoreSight trace decode for Cortex-M, Cortex-R, Cortex-A, Cortex-X, and Neoverse targets. Gold FuSa Edition adds the safety-qualified AC6 FuSa compiler and the Arm Safety-Certified C/C++ Library, certified to ISO 26262 ASIL D (Automotive), IEC 61508 SIL 3 (Industrial), EN 50716 SIL 4 (Railway), and IEC 62304 Class C (Medical) per Arm’s published AC6 FuSa product page.

Note: the Cortex-M-only FuSa RTS (FuSa RTX RTOS + FuSa CMSIS-Core) is bundled with MDK Professional, not Arm Development Studio. The Dev Studio Gold FuSa deliverable is the Safety-Certified C/C++ Library, which is a distinct Arm product.

Arm Development Studio Gold Edition: Buy in India

Gold Edition is the standard commercial license for teams building Cortex-R and Cortex-A firmware without a functional-safety certification requirement, distinct from the Gold FuSa edition above. It bundles Arm Compiler 6 and Arm Toolchain for Embedded (ATfE Pro), the Streamline performance analyzer, CoreSight trace decode, and multicore SMP/AMP debug across Cortex-M, Cortex-R, Cortex-A, Cortex-X, and Neoverse targets. GSAS Micro Systems, Arm’s authorized engineering partner in India, offers Gold Edition with competitive pricing and short lead times for engineering teams in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR. Streamline Performance Analyzer

Streamline is the system-wide performance profiler bundled with every Development Studio edition. It captures hardware counter data, software trace events, and power metrics across all cores simultaneously, presenting them in a unified timeline. Engineers can drill down from high-level CPU utilization to individual function hotspots, cache miss patterns, and memory bandwidth saturation. Streamline’s annotation API lets firmware teams instrument custom events, task switches, DMA completions, interrupt latencies, and correlate them with hardware counters to pinpoint system-level bottlenecks that single-core profilers miss entirely.

Streamline profiles across the full Arm target range, bare-metal and RTOS systems from Cortex-M through Cortex-A, Linux targets, and Neoverse server platforms, with a CPU-based sampler that maps program-counter activity from system level down to line-by-line application source (C, C++, Rust, Go). For Indian SoC, set-top-box, automotive IVI, and Linux-on-Arm teams in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, this is the system-wide profiler bundled with Arm Development Studio (Arm also ships Streamline via Arm Performance Studio for Android game profiling and as Streamline CLI Tools for server workloads). Development Studio integrates with DSTREAM-ST and DSTREAM-PT debug probes for high-bandwidth trace capture, enabling non-intrusive performance profiling and code coverage collection on production-representative hardware.

DSTREAM probe options for Development Studio

Per Arm’s DSTREAM product page, Development Studio integrates with two currently-marketed DSTREAM debug probes, DSTREAM-ST (streaming-trace) and DSTREAM-PT (wide-parallel-trace), chosen by the target SoC’s trace topology rather than tiered by capability:

ProbeInterfaceTrace bandwidthBufferBest For
DSTREAM-STJTAG/SWD + 4-bit TPIU streamed to hostUp to 2.4 Gbps streamedNone (streams to host)Long-capture Cortex-M/R/A on 4-bit TPIU targets
DSTREAM-PTJTAG/SWD + 4/8/16/32-bit parallel TPIUUp to 19.2 Gbps captured8 GB on-probe with hardware compressionWide-TPIU Cortex-M/R/A bring-up

For SoCs that require higher-bandwidth trace transports (HSSTP or PCIe-based debug, typically high-end application Cortex-A and Neoverse server platforms), Arm offers optional add-on trace probes outside the ST/PT family. Indian SoC teams evaluating those configurations should talk to GSAS so we can route the conversation to Arm’s design-tools team.

Fixed Virtual Platforms (FVPs): Shift-Left Development

Arm Fixed Virtual Platforms are functionally accurate software models of Arm-based SoCs that run on standard x86 workstations. Development Studio Gold includes access to FVPs for Cortex-A, Cortex-R, and Neoverse platforms, enabling teams to begin software development months before physical silicon or development boards are available.

  • Pre-silicon development: Start firmware, driver, and OS porting work on a virtual SoC while the chip is still in fabrication
  • CI/CD testing: Run automated test suites on FVP targets in cloud CI pipelines without physical hardware
  • Multi-configuration validation: Test firmware across different core configurations, memory maps, and peripheral sets without maintaining a hardware farm
  • Security development: Develop and validate TrustZone implementations on virtual platforms with full debug visibility

For Indian automotive and semiconductor teams where SoC tape-out timelines extend 12-18 months, FVPs compress the software development schedule by enabling parallel hardware/software development from day one.

Arm Development Studio vs Other Debug IDEs for Cortex-A/R

Engineering teams selecting a debug IDE for Cortex-A, Cortex-R, or Neoverse development typically evaluate Arm Development Studio alongside alternatives such as Lauterbach TRACE32, the discontinued DS-5, and GDB-based toolchains. Development Studio’s core advantage is its native integration with the Arm architecture, the Arm Compiler 6 (LLVM-based) produces optimized code with architecture-specific passes, Streamline provides system-wide performance profiling using hardware counters across all cores simultaneously, and CoreSight trace decode operates natively through DSTREAM-ST and DSTREAM-PT probes.

For trace analysis and performance profiling, Development Studio captures hardware counter data, software events, and power metrics in a unified timeline, enabling engineers to correlate function hotspots with cache miss patterns, memory bandwidth saturation, and interrupt latencies. The Gold FuSa edition adds a safety-certified compiler and runtime system qualified to IEC 61508 SIL 3, ISO 26262 ASIL D, and IEC 62304 Class C, making it the only embedded development environment that combines Arm debugger capabilities, high-bandwidth trace, and functional safety certification in a single integrated platform.
