Sensepeek SQ vs SP Series: What Changed and Should You Upgrade?
Sensepeek’s original SP-series probes established the PCBite hands-free probing system as a practical alternative to clip-on leads. The SP10 (10 MHz, 1:1) and SP200 (200 MHz, 10:1) probes, combined with the magnetic base plate and articulating arms, solved the fundamental problem of holding probes steady on fine-pitch PCBs. The newer SQ-series, SQ10, SQ200, and SQ500, builds on the same platform with meaningful design improvements.
This post documents what changed between the SP and SQ generations, what stayed the same, and whether existing SP-series users should upgrade.
What Changed: Five Design Improvements
1. Fully Insulated Probe Bodies
The most visible change is the insulated probe body on every SQ-series probe. The SP-series probes had exposed metal sections that required care when probing near high-voltage nodes or closely spaced components. The SQ-series wraps the probe body in insulation, enabling two modes of operation: hands-free on the magnetic base plate (as before) and safe handheld use for quick spot-check measurements.
This dual-mode capability effectively means each SQ probe can serve as both a PCBite hands-free probe and a traditional handheld probe, depending on the task.
2. Lower Center of Gravity
Sensepeek redesigned the probe body geometry to lower the center of gravity. The practical effect is improved stability when the probe is mounted on the articulating arm. With the SP-series, a bump to the bench or cable tension could occasionally shift a probe off its target pad. The SQ-series probes sit more securely on the magnetic mount, which matters during long debug sessions and multi-probe setups where six probes share the same base plate.
3. Exchangeable Spring-Loaded Needles
Both the SP and SQ series use spring-loaded test needles, but the SQ-series standardized on a 0.5 mm exchangeable needle design shared across the entire lineup, SQ10, SQ200, and SQ500. Replacement needles swap in seconds without tools. The SP-series had a similar needle mechanism, but the SQ-series needle design is unified across all models, simplifying inventory. If you stock SQ replacement needles, they work in any SQ probe.
4. SQ500: A New Bandwidth Tier
The SP-series topped out at 200 MHz with the SP200. The SQ-series adds the SQ500 at 500 MHz bandwidth with just 9 pF input capacitance. This is not an incremental improvement, it opens up USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), LVDS, MIPI, and DDR interface debugging that was beyond the SP200’s reach.
For hardware teams in Bengaluru and Hyderabad working on high-speed digital designs, the SQ500 fills a gap that previously required switching away from the PCBite platform entirely.
5. Color-Coded Cable Management
The SQ-series introduces color-coded cable holders that route probe cables cleanly across the base plate. In multi-probe setups, four SQ10 probes plus two SQ200 or SQ500 probes on the same board, cable management becomes important. Tangled cables pull on probe arms and introduce noise. The color coding also makes it easy to trace which oscilloscope channel corresponds to which probe position without following cables visually.
What Stayed the Same
The fundamental PCBite platform is unchanged. The same DIN A4 stainless steel base plate (297 x 210 mm), the same CNC-machined aluminum PCB holders, the same articulating arms with magnetic bases, all SP-series accessories and base plates work with SQ-series probes, and vice versa. The magnetic mount interface is identical. You do not need a new base plate to use SQ probes, and your existing SP probes continue to work alongside new SQ probes on the same setup.
The SQ10 and SQ200 maintain the same core electrical specifications as their SP predecessors. The SQ10 is still 10 MHz, 1:1, ±60V DC / 30V AC RMS. The SQ200 is still 200 MHz, 10:1, 10 M-ohm, 300V CAT II. The measurement capabilities are consistent, the improvements are in mechanical design, ergonomics, and safety, not in the electrical performance of the 10 MHz and 200 MHz tiers.
Should You Upgrade?
The answer depends on your current setup and what you need:
Upgrade if you need the 500 MHz bandwidth tier. The SQ500 has no SP-series equivalent. If your work involves USB 2.0, LVDS, MIPI, or fast-switching power devices, the SQ500 is the only PCBite-compatible probe that covers these signals. You can add individual SQ500 probes to your existing base plate without replacing anything else.
Upgrade if you use probes handheld. The SQ-series insulated body makes handheld probing safer and more practical than with the exposed SP-series bodies. If your workflow alternates between hands-free PCBite measurements and quick handheld spot checks, the SQ-series handles both modes in a single probe.
Upgrade if you are expanding your probe inventory. If you need additional 200 MHz probes, buy the SQ200 rather than trying to source discontinued SP200 units. The SQ200 is the current-production replacement with the same electrical specs plus the ergonomic improvements.
No immediate need to upgrade if your existing SP10 and SP200 probes are meeting your measurement requirements and you are using them exclusively in hands-free mode on the base plate. The SP-series probes continue to function correctly on the PCBite platform. Upgrading makes sense when you need new probes anyway, or when the SQ500 bandwidth or the insulated handheld capability addresses a gap in your workflow.
Recommended Upgrade Paths
For labs in Chennai and Pune running a mix of SP-series probes, the most cost-effective upgrade is to add SQ500 probes individually rather than replacing the entire kit. Your base plate, PCB holders, and SQ10/SP10 probes remain in service. The SQ500 probes drop into the same magnetic mount and add 500 MHz capability to the existing setup.
