The High-Resolution Oscilloscope Decision
If your measurement work in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, or Delhi NCR is about precision rather than raw bandwidth, the mainstream 8-bit oscilloscope is the wrong tool. Battery cell characterization, low-noise analog design, sensor drift analysis, audio-frequency testing, and high-dynamic-range power measurements all need more vertical resolution than the common 8-bit scope provides.
Two instruments show up repeatedly on the Indian shortlist for this work: the Siglent SDS2000X HD and the PicoScope 5000D FlexRes. Both aim at the same niche, high-resolution oscilloscope measurement, but they take different architectural paths.

The Two Instruments in Context
Siglent SDS2000X HD
Siglent’s SDS2000X HD is a standalone benchtop oscilloscope with a 12-bit ADC across the whole range. It comes in 70 MHz, 100 MHz, 200 MHz, and 350 MHz bandwidth options, with 2 or 4 analog channels, up to 200 Mpoints of standard memory on the top configurations, a large touchscreen UI, and strong built-in analysis features. Siglent has been aggressive on Indian pricing and has grown a large footprint with hobbyist, maker, and professional buyers.
PicoScope 5000D FlexRes
The PicoScope 5000D FlexRes is a USB 3.0 oscilloscope from Pico Technology. The headline feature is hardware FlexRes, the ability to switch resolution between 8-bit, 12-bit, 14-bit, 15-bit, and 16-bit modes, trading bandwidth for vertical precision at the hardware level. Bandwidth options span 60 MHz, 100 MHz, and 200 MHz, with 2 or 4 analog channels and up to 512 MS buffer memory on the top configurations. It runs PicoScope 7 software on Windows, macOS, and Linux with 40+ serial protocol decoders included standard.

Vertical Resolution
- Siglent SDS2000X HD: 12-bit ADC, fixed.
- PicoScope 5000D FlexRes: 8-bit, 12-bit, 14-bit, 15-bit, or 16-bit hardware resolution modes.
This is the core architectural difference. Siglent gives you a flat 12-bit experience across the full bandwidth. PicoScope lets you choose: run 8-bit for fast captures of wide-bandwidth signals, switch to 16-bit for precision work where dynamic range matters more than speed.
For a battery characterization bench that needs both high-resolution ripple analysis and fast transient capture, FlexRes is a real workflow advantage, one scope, two very different measurement modes. For a bench that only ever cares about 12-bit, the Siglent keeps things simpler.
Bandwidth
- Siglent SDS2000X HD: 70 / 100 / 200 / 350 MHz.
- PicoScope 5000D FlexRes: 60 / 100 / 200 MHz.
Siglent has a slight edge at the top bandwidth tier, a 350 MHz option that PicoScope 5000D does not match within its family. If your measurement genuinely needs 350 MHz analog bandwidth and 12-bit resolution on the same instrument, Siglent covers it in a single box. If your work stays within 200 MHz, both are in-range.
Buffer Memory
- Siglent SDS2000X HD: up to 200 Mpoints standard on the top configurations.
- PicoScope 5000D FlexRes: up to 512 MS standard on the top configurations.
PicoScope has a meaningful edge here, roughly a 2.5x deeper standard buffer at the top end. For battery discharge cycle analysis over minutes, for audio-frequency sweeps with fine frequency resolution, or for long-duration sensor drift capture, the extra buffer depth is the difference between one clean capture and stitching together multiple acquisitions.
Sample Rate
- Siglent SDS2000X HD: up to 2 GS/s real-time sampling (interleaved) on the top configurations.
- PicoScope 5000D FlexRes: up to 1 GS/s real-time sampling in 8-bit mode, scaling down in higher-resolution modes.
For the signal classes this niche targets, low-frequency precision measurement, both are more than adequate.
Channels
- Both platforms offer 2-channel and 4-channel options.
- Neither targets mixed-signal as a headline feature in this specific family. If you need MSO, look at the 6000E on the PicoScope side and at Siglent’s other families.
Display and Form Factor
- Siglent SDS2000X HD: standalone benchtop with a large capacitive touchscreen, physical front panel knobs, and built-in analysis.
- PicoScope 5000D FlexRes: compact USB 3.0 desktop unit that drives the engineer’s own PC display. Use your 14-inch laptop on the road, your 32-inch lab monitor on the bench.
Software
- PicoScope 7 (for the 5000D FlexRes): Windows, macOS, and Linux. 40+ serial protocol decoders included standard. Free lifetime updates. Scripting via pyPicoSDK, C/C++, LabVIEW, and MATLAB.
- Siglent: strong built-in analysis on the instrument. Desktop software tooling is Windows-oriented.

- PicoScope 5000D FlexRes: 40+ decoders included standard in PicoScope 7.
- Siglent SDS2000X HD: a core decoder set is included; additional advanced decoders can be available as options depending on the specific model configuration.
If your work crosses into serial bus decode, I2C sensor interfaces, SPI flash, CAN for automotive sensor characterization, I2S for audio, PicoScope keeps all the decoders in the base price.
The Technical Verdict on Resolution
For precision measurement work where the core priority is vertical dynamic range, the PicoScope 5000D FlexRes is the technical winner because of three things: the ability to switch to 14-bit, 15-bit, and 16-bit hardware modes for the most demanding precision captures; the deeper standard buffer memory for long-duration precision runs; and the cross-platform software environment that integrates with Python measurement scripts on Linux and macOS.
If the core priority is a standalone touchscreen benchtop instrument that just works without a PC, and your measurements stay comfortably within 12-bit dynamic range, the Siglent SDS2000X HD is a coherent, well-built pick with an aggressive total cost position in India.

Siglent SDS2000X HD: Trade-offs
- Fixed 12-bit, no 14-bit or 16-bit hardware mode for the most demanding precision work.

- Benchtop footprint is not portable.
- Software ecosystem is less cross-platform than PicoScope 7.
